Nestled in Seattle's University District, Thai Tom offers a vibrant slice of authentic Thai street food culture, reminiscent of the bustling stalls of Bangkok. This small but spirited eatery at 4543 University Way NE delivers a culinary experience that centers on freshness, bold flavors, and simplicity. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the rhythmic clatter of woks and the fiery sizzle of dishes cooked to order, encapsulating the dynamic energy of a true Thai kitchen.
The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Tom Yum Soup—a rich, tangy broth bursting with fragrant herbs and a generous portion of plump shrimp that delights the palate with every spoonful. Equally captivating is the Tom Kha Soup, which strikes a perfect balance between creamy coconut and zesty lime. Each dish showcases careful attention to traditional Thai flavor profiles, blending heat, sourness, and sweetness in harmony.
Signature dishes like Pad Thai and Curry Fried Rice are crafted with authentic ingredients and meticulous technique. While the Pad Thai's portion size may feel modest, its layered flavors leave a lasting impression, and the Curry Fried Rice serves as a comforting, satisfying complement. Complementary sides such as the smooth, nutty Peanut Sauce and fluffy White Rice enhance the dining experience.
Drinks like the sweet, creamy Thai Tea and robust Thai Coffee round out the menu, providing refreshing counterpoints to the spicier offerings. However, it’s important to note that Thai Tom operates primarily as a cash-only establishment, with limited seating and minimal service frills, focusing instead on delivering quality food swiftly and efficiently. This no-nonsense approach reinforces the authenticity of the experience, placing the spotlight squarely on the cuisine.
While the space is compact and the ambiance understated, the lively kitchen spectacle and the depth of flavors ensure Thai Tom stands out as a gem for those seeking genuine Thai taste in Seattle. It feels like a well-kept secret where the simplicity of the setting dissolves into the complexity of the food’s character. For fans of vibrant, freshly cooked Thai fare, Thai Tom is a destination worth discovering.

CASH ONLY! Though we were able to do Zelle this time. Tom yum soup was thick, very flavorful, and I was pleasantly surprised that there were ~6 shrimps in the small bowl. Pad Thai was flavorful, but the portion is quite small for the price. Curry fried rice was good flavors, and the portion was good. Overall the food was tasty, the cooking was fast, however, the good things were not worth everything else that were not good. No water was offered, you can buy bottled water for $1.5. The place is not exactly clean and the service was just acceptable - so dine-in is not pleasant. The portion of the food isn’t exactly good value for the price - so take-out is a just ok option.

This spot was as close as I could get to a Bangkok street market stall vendor outside of Thailand. Immediately as I walked in, there was an immediate blast of heat from the multiple fiery woks on the Stove and a rhythmic dance between the chefs and wait staff taking orders, exchanging cash and running the well oiled machine of the restaurant. The Food was excellent and my only complaint is I didn’t pay using Thai Baht! 4.5/5

Don’t judge by how small of a space this little Thai restaurant is! Our favorite place for pipping hot and spicy Thai dishes in University district! They have the chef make your order right in front of you highlighting the fresh ingredients and cooking. Optimum vegetarian choices and great food!! Just don’t forget, they accept only cash and service is OK. Don’t recommend big groups as it gets crammed

It was the coolest experience to watch the chefs cook your food right in front of you. I’ve never had a more delicious dish of drunken noodles before. I really recommend this place

One of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants on the Ave. They serve very good Thai standards, efficiently prepared at reasonable prices. They usually don't have anything unusual or eclectic, but everything is very good, prepared and served efficiently. It's a small, busy space with limited seating, so there isn't much atmosphere, but that's fine since food is the main priority. CASH Only.

I used to love this place but unfortunately prices have gone up and portion size has gone down. My standard chicken pad thai was $16.25, more salty than I remember, and they also seemed to have stopped offering water for free? While the food still tastes good, I think there are plenty of spots with much higher value on the Ave…
